As each rehearsal progresses into the next week, I can feel the rising excitement of the cast and crew. Yesterday’s rehearsal in particular seemed to be chock-full of discoveries being made with character choices. Mouna’s bravery and emotional openness is leading her to find Othello’s great sensitivity. Julie is tackling the circumstances of Emilia as an abused woman with admirable maturity and empathy. Sarah’s exploration into Iago’s evil, twisted nature increases in complexity every night. Together, we are beginning to trust ourselves with the mechanics of blocking and transitioning into emotional character work: the actor’s most challenging task.
